"Pharaoh" exhibition

Masters of earth and the universe, gods among gods, and kings with unlimited powers all along the Nile Valley from Sudan to Lower Egypt: these were just some of the roles enjoyed by the Pharaohs. This exhibition, entirely devoted to them, offers a chance to learn more about the function and history of one of the greatest institutions of antiquity.

The idea behind the ”Pharaoh” exhibition was to show the Pharaohs in their role as both personage and institution. This duality, a commonplace concept among Egyptologists but little known to the general public, has contributed to the enduring fascination of the Pharaohs in the West and East alike.

The show opened with a selection of monumental exhibits illustrating the essence of the Pharaohs and their civilization, and a gallery of portraits of various Pharaohs. Some 15 statues and over 250 other exhibits opened a window on 3,500 years of history, from the earliest kingdoms to the early Hellenic period (3rd century BC).

- Total – exclusive sponsor of the ”Pharaoh” exhibition -

Offering the public an appreciation of the complexity of this key ancient Egyptian institution was Total’s objective in sponsoring the ”Pharaoh” exhibition. Northeast Africa and the Arabic Peninsula are two regions where we have a particularly solid presence. In its initiatives regarding heritage protection and preservation, Total is especially sensitive to the importance of knowledge of civilizations. By giving everyone the chance to explore, understand and appreciate the riches of the past – in this case, ancient Egypt, a subject especially dear to the French – Total helps achieve this objective.
